Comm's w/ talking babies & our societies decline
« Thread Started on Jul 29, 2005, 4:44pm »

Well, the subject says it all, I can't stand commericials with talking babies, in fact, talking babies period annoy me to no end.

Does anyone actually buy a product because the commercial had a talking baby, really, does anyone at all.

Or that short lasted tv show "Baby Bob", which was just a talking baby, it even got really good ratings it's first night, but then it was cancelled two epidsodes later.

Back to commercials, commercials are the ultimate sign of the decline of capitalism, capitalism in theory says that the better product will survive, but advertising gets in the way of that, Nike isn't a bigger company than Brand X shoes, it's just got more advertising with famous people in them. The ultimate case of this is when a basketball player has a line of shoes named after him (that would of course be Air Jordans), which could of been crap shoes with fancy paint being sold at $150 and it still would of sold more than Brand X shoes, just because Michaelf Jordan put his name on it.

On that note, don't even get me started on Brittany Spear's perfume "Curious".

And then there comes the final step in the decline of our society, the step that I predicted a few months ago would be as far as we can literally fall, a step, which I found out to my horror last night, has been reached, eating competitions are being broadcast on ESPN.

Eating competitions are being broadcast on ESPN!

When a national sports network feels they will get more viewers by running two hours (at least) off people gorging themselves than if they would recap the weeks top new stories or run an entertaining sports related movie (The Longest Yard, or The Replacements would of been nice), then how much more can we sink? Really, how much more can we sink?

Women love babies, J, especially talking ones. They're real cute, apparently!

My wife is just the opposite. She thinks they look hideous. The one on the Quizno's commercial really freaks her out.

Well, Jacob, it's a good thing you are partly gay. You won't have to worry about any talking babies that way.

That Quizno's baby freaks me out.

Hey Jenn. Your avatar is confusing me. It says "the lovely Mrs C. " above it, but then I see a cat. I don't remember Howard's wife being a cat. Maybe Chuck's mom was the cat. Very confusing..... :)

I wasn't aware of the proliferation of talking babies, I didn't know that Brittany Spears has a perfume named "Curious," and I was oblivious to the fact that ESPN is broadcasting eating competitions until you pointed it out here, Jacob.

Perhaps our society isn't declining -- maybe all of this points to the fact that you might watch too much TV, and perhaps you're a bit too "culturally aware."

Maybe it is true that ignorance is bliss . . .

I don't watch that much TV really, I just pick things up, and I have a slightly annoying habit of not forgetting things often.

Talking babies are creepy when they have been CGI'd to have moving mouths. Ick. And then there's the trend of dressing up babies as vegetables ...

That 'babies as vegetables' thing can be squarely blamed on Photographer Anne Geddes, and her damnable greeting cards. Now, everywhere you look, there's some kid in an ad for something, dressed up as a walnut and fast asleep on a pile of other sleeping kids dressed up like walnuts. It's disturbing.

And that dancing baby was nothing short of freakish. I think it was probably created by the same twisted minds behind the Crazy Frog - another sign of our impending demise, Jacob.

The unnerving thing is, just when you think 'that's it, things cannot get any more stupid'....they do. I can see a time when stuff like (the original) Rollerball or Soylent Green won't be that farfetched any more. It's like we're degenerating - Western society seems to have become an exercise in 'survival of the least imaginative'. Just look at the proliferation of 'reality' TV. And who's watching this tripe? Kids, the most impressionable viewers of all.

Anyway, sorry to rant and rave. I just thought Jacob had a point. Weird, though, how a talking baby is flat-out creepy, but a talking dog is either funny or just boring. There's something to that...but I can't think of what it might be at the moment.
